While Leonard Peltier remains in jail …

While Leonard Peltier remains in jail …

Letter to the Editor: As the wheels of bureaucracy turns slowly, we still have the ability to call the White House and demand freedom for Leonard Peltier.

To Native American Times:

The campaign for freedom for Leonard Peltier has been long and frustrating, and when I read the following, I feel I had to share my outrage at the imbalance of justice:

While Leonard Peltier remains in jail …

Arthur H. Bremer shot Wallace during a presidential campaign stop in Laurel, Md. Spokesman Mark A. Vernarelli said Bremer left the prison before sunrise Friday after serving 35 years of his sentence.

Hinkley, the man who tried to kill President Ronald Reagan. is now allowed to visit his mother more, to get a driver’s license and spend more time away from the mental hospital where he lives.

Lindsey Fromme, who pointed a gun at President Gerald Ford…

When presidential assassins can walk free, while an innocent man remains imprisoned is an injustice to the conscience to all people. Peltier had his parole hearing last month, and supporters worldwide are anxiously awaiting an announcement.

As the wheels of bureaucracy turns slowly, we still have the ability to call the White House and demand freedom for Leonard Peltier. Also, everyone has the opportunity to meet with their Congress person while they are on congressional recess and are back in their home state.

We all need to do this now, so that if a denial is issued by the parole commission, we will have already began expressing our prairie fire of outrage to the White House demanding that Obama grant clemency for Peltier. This has to happen and our time is now.
