Dear Friends:
Senators Nelson (D-NE) and Hatch (R-UT) will introduce a Stupak-like amendment to expand restrictions on access to abortion. This amendment would ban abortion coverage in public and private health insurance plans that receive federal subsidies. It is unconscionable that millions of women could lose benefits they currently have within this historic effort to expand health insurance benefits.
The House- passed Stupak-Pitts amendment is disrespectful of women and an affront to our nation's promise of freedom of religion and separation of church and state. The House of Representatives bowed to the pressure of the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops and agreed to impose the theology of this one religious tradition on all of us.
Please contact your Senators NOW and tell them to stop Stupak and pass strong, meaningful health care reform.
