Leonard Peltier Defense Offense Committee Response to Parole Denial

...BREAKING NEWS...

PAROLE HAS BEEN DENIED

LP-DOC RESPONSE

The Leonard Peltier Defense Offense Committee acknowledges the receipt of the decision of the United States Parole Commission to deny parole for American Indian Political Prisoner Leonard Peltier. We wish to thank our thousands of supporters for their tenacious efforts, in particular during the months leading to Leonard's recent hearing. Currently we are in the process of finalizing plans for efforts around exercising our right to challenge this decision, advocate for intervention by President Obama, and succeeding in getting both proper medical attention for Leonard and a transfer to a federal prison closer to home. We will be issuing directives within the near future.

AMERICAN INDIAN ACTIVIST DENIED PAROLE

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) U.S. Attorney Drew Wrigley says imprisoned American Indian activist Leonard Peltier has once again been denied parole.

Wrigley says the next scheduled hearing for Peltier is 2024, when Peltier would be 79 years old.

Peltier is serving two life sentences for the execution-style deaths of FBI agents Jack Coler and Ronald Williams during a June 26, 1975, standoff on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

He was convicted in Fargo, N.D., in 1977. He has claimed the FBI framed him, which the agency denies, and unsuccessfully appealed his conviction numerous times.

Peltier had a full parole hearing for the first time in 15 years last month at the Lewisburg, Pa., federal prison where he is being held.

Defense attorney Eric Seitz declined comment on the U.S. Parole Commission decision Friday, saying the Justice Department had not informed him.

UPDATES ON 7/28/09 PAROLE HEARING

UPDATE AUGUST 20TH
We continue to wait for news of the decision from the parole commission. Please continue your calls to the White House and all efforts of support. We are grateful for your tireless work and dedicated support for our brother. Freedom!

UPDATE AUGUST 18TH
We believe the expected announcement may occur past the 28th of August when you calculate business days, as opposed to calendar days. There is the unknown factor of when the regional commissioner received the Hearing Examiners recommendation, and if the regional commissioner has sent it on to the full commission.

CONTACT VACATIONING CONGRESSMEN FOR PELTIER...

Elected members of Congress have returned to their home states for Summer Recess! Now is the time to schedule a meeting to talk with your state senator or congressperson about Leonard's case. We have an opportunity to ask our representatives to take a position on Leonard's release.

Seize the opportunity to educate the many new 'freshman' members of Congress who may not know the specifics of the case or even about Leonard Peltier. Meet with those who are sitting on the fence. Others who are long time supporters need to be asked to become Leonard's champions in this important year.

You might want to frame your request for a meeting with a phrase similar to "How may we work together to seek justice for Native Americans? How may I help you in your role as a leader?"

Then ASK - Have your representative call President Obama urging he support Parole and the immediate release of Leonard Peltier.

Talking points:

1. Leonard's served over 33 years in prison and is eligible for parole.
2. The government has conceded that it does not know who shot the two agents.
3. The government is still fighting vigorously to prevent the release of thousands and thousands of pages of documents under FOIA…documents that should have been turned over to defense attorneys years ago.
4. Leonard will turn 65 on September 12th and he is not in the best of health.
5. Leonard was brutally attacked on January 13, 2009 by two other inmates
and prison officials did nothing to prevent the attack from happening.

LEONARD PELTIER WILL BE FREE!

Convicted on the basis of fabricated and suppressed evidence, as well as coerced testimony, Leonard Peltier has been imprisoned for over 30 years for a crime he did not commit. Many people believe that the Peltier case is an issue of "left" versus "right". It's not. It's an issue of right versus wrong.

Your Financial Help is Needed

Dear Friends,

Often I am asked the simple question – 'how's Leonard?'

On any given day the answer can be much the same – he's in good spirits, thankful for the many brothers and sisters of all nations who care about him. He shares with us about his latest painting, or the latest letter he has received that so often gives his heart joy.

But then, there is the answer between the lines. He rarely talks about it, but we only have to explore beneath his courageous exterior to know his heart – a heart that longs for freedom. A heart that longs to feel the sunlight on his skin, the wind against his back. To hear a bird sing or walk along the plains. To be home…

We are in a time that is unparalleled for his case. We have a new president who has studied Leonard's case in law school; a president who has already exhibited that he is not afraid to make decisions which some might deem politically risky. And we now have the date set for the parole hearing. Perhaps this really is a season of change.

The work of the Leonard Peltier Defense Offense Committee is vast. Our staff and board work closely with the legal team. We are committed to raising awareness about Leonard's case and the true facts. The LP-DOC wishes to share the beautiful message of Leonard's art work, which stands as a testimony to what one can do under the most adverse of circumstances. Most of all, we do all we can at the many advocacy levels to support our brother, our friend and bring him home.

Today's economic reality has also had an impact on our work. We are watching all expenditures, cutting travel and even some support to staff. As we live into these difficult times, we are determined to rise to a new level of efficient, proactive advocacy to secure freedom for Leonard Peltier. We can only accomplish our many goals with you as a partner, walking this journey with us.

Please, if you are able, sit down and write out a check to the Leonard Peltier Defense Offense Committee today, or establish a monthly automatic withdrawl from your bank account to the Leonard Peltier Defense Offense Committee. Help us to affect profound and lasting change – freedom! Thank you. Please help in any way you can.

Billie K. Fidlin

AIM for FreedomTM

The Leonard Peltier Defense Offense Committee (LP-DOC) has launched a new, international public education/awareness and political action campaign on Leonard's behalf. We call it AIM for Freedom.

Our work currently takes us in four directions:

  1. a grant of parole;

  2. an award of Executive Clemency;

  3. a congressional investigation into the FBI's misconduct in Indian Country, against the American Indian Movement and in the case of Leonard Peltier; and

  4. the release of the tens of thousands of related case documents.

Any or all of these strategies may lead to Leonard's release.

Activities related to these strategies will be introduced in the coming months. Visit us often to learn more about our efforts to win Leonard's freedom, obtain campaign materials, and find out how you can help.
