A Democratic congressman may have some explaining to do to his constituents after telling Politico that a quarter of them back a crazy conspiracy theory.
In an article entitled "GOP headache: The birther issue," Lisa Lerer and Daniel Libit report on how Republicans are finding out that "there’s no easy way to deal with the small but vocal crowd of right-wing activists who refuse to believe that President Barack Obama was born in the United States."
But it's this part in which the Democratic chairman of the House Agriculture Committee is quoted which might have the largest impact:
Out-party politicians have long had to deal with conspiracy theorists on their side — the people who think that the Clintons killed Vince Foster or that the Bush administration helped orchestrate the Sept. 11 attacks.
“Twenty-five percent of my people believe the Pentagon and Rumsfeld were responsible for taking the twin towers down,” said Rep. Collin Peterson, a Democrat who represents a conservative Republican district in Minnesota. “That’s why I don’t do town meetings.”
While there are certainly thousands upon thousands of Americans with legitimate questions about what really happened on 9/11, only the fringe elements have internally convicted Bush officials for "taking the twin towers down."
No doubt, Peterson has his own questions, since in 2002, as a member of the House Intelligence Committee, he said of FBI whistle-blower Coleen Rowley, "It took a lot of guts to do what she did."
Rowley had alleged "that FBI headquarters rewrote Minneapolis agents' pre-Sept. 11 request for surveillance and search warrants for terrorism defendant Zacarias Moussaoui and removed important information before rejecting them," the Associated Press reported in 2002. "Agent Coleen Rowley wrote that the Minneapolis agents became so frustrated that they began to joke that FBI headquarters was becoming an 'unwitting accomplice' to Osama bin Laden's efforts to attack the United States, the officials said."
Liberal activists have been targeting 'Blue Dog' Democrats, partially because of their opposition to the Obama administration's plans to revamp health care.
At the Washington Independent, David Weigl highlights Peterson's "head-scratching quote" in a post called "Blue Dog Values."
"Asked about a problem in the Republican base, Peterson chooses to … bash liberals in his own district, which gave Obama a not-exactly-fringey 47 percent of the vote," Weigl blogs.
Peterson was recently hailed for "shedding the 'Blue Dog' label when he supported Obama’s deficit-saturated budget" in April and the Waxman/Markey global warming tax.
But many Minnesotans in the seventh congressional district may wonder why their Democratic representative thinks a quarter of them are so nuts that he won't go to town meetings anymore.

It is NOT a theory anymore buttclown, it is FACT that nano-thermite was/is in the rubble of the twin towers as well as building 7. It is FACT that there was molten steel at the bottom of the towers of which there is NO WAY that jet fuel is going to melt high carbon steel, it "starts" to melt at 3000 degrees farenheit where jet fuel burns at max temp of 1200-1400 degrees. Peterson's quite mistaken. Most of the 'truthers' I know are largely rightwing conservatives. Which is why it's a completely eroneous assumption that the GOP are oft fond of throwing around that leftwingers are mostly 'conspiracy nuts'.
But in all fairness... and it always does go back to the complete lack of transparency and obfuscations put up by the Bush administration during the 9/11 hearings, -that far too many questions were never properly addressed.
I don't know that it's being paranoid to see holes in THAT administrations' dealings about anything.
While one can easily point to the fact that Ashcroft and Condaleeza Rice failed in heeding the ample warnings they recieved in the form of detailed reports handed to them from outgoing national security officials... there are still questions and serious doubts that remain that fuel the rumours of 'false flag' operations or that flight 93 may have been shot down by military officials.
I won't say anything with 100% certainty other than what is generally known to be true. But questons remain for me surrounding Flight 93, the Pentagon attack and WTC building 7.
The previous administration's secretive nature and Cheney's own imperious approach to governance will continue to give me pause to consider the less outrageous of claims promoted by the 'truthers'.

This really isn't that difficult to understand Rep. Collin Peterson. Simple science proves the inside job aspect of 9/11. Both WTC towers fell at near 'freefall acceleration'. Freefall acceleration is described as the time it would take to drop an object a given distance until it reaches the ground with only gravity as the downward force. Ex: the time it would take to drop a baseball off the top of one of the 110 storey World Trade Center buildings until it hit the street below with only air as the resistant force. (About 9.2 seconds.) Therefore, as each tower collapsed, how is it physically possible for them to collapse at this speed with all of the massive steel and concrete support structure below giving NO RESISTANCE? Also, what was the energy force that caused massive multi-ton steel support columns to be ejected laterally outward up to 600 feet embedding them into nearby buildings? What was the energy force that caused all of the concrete to be pulverized into a fine powder covering all of lower Manhattan? The Physics Law of Conservation of Momentum does not allow for this. You can't have it both ways. If the Official Government Conspiracy Theory claims that the weight of the part of the building above the plane impact area crushed the lower structure how can it also have the energy to eject the steel outward and pulverize the concrete too? Simple answer. It can't. Who planted the explosives in the three WTC buildings in New York City on 9/11?
It's simply science. The only way the three WTC buildings could fall at this rate is that the structure columns were being removed (demolished using explosives) as the buildings fell causing no resistance. The laws of physics don't/can't lie. Governments and their paid propagandist can and do.

There is a respected though minority view among historians that Roosevelt facilitated the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in his quest to get the US into World War II. And most historians reject that theory but they don't try to demean the proponents as being lunatics or worse "conspiracy theorists" (as if nothing ever happens because of a conspiracy!) So WHY is it so inconceivable that Dick Cheney and/or the PNAC neo-cons allowed an attack on America in order to start a war with Islam that would give them a chance to invade Iraq and grab some big oil at the same time? Yes there were planes that were hijacked and flown into buildings but at least one of the Towers, No. 7, has a good probability that it was pre-wired for demo. The Pentagon showed no signs that a plane flew into it and the piloting of a plane into it was too hard for most pilots. Take all that into consideration with addition of a Manifesto by the PNAC that they had to find a Pearl Harbor-like event so they could get into war with Iraq written back in 1998 and signed by most of the Bush administration including Dick Cheney and anyone that doesn't have questions is a fool. I don't know what happened but I damn well know that we haven't had the true story yet.

The government probably was behind 9-11. Tower 7 didn't just fall on its own. Even if the government wasn't behind 9-11 there is much that they're covering up about it. We still don't know all that we know about the attacks that happened on that day and I would like to know the truth about them.

When the fringe wackos are the leaders of your movement, it's pretty hard to claim to be a reasonable questioner without specifically denouncing the idiocy.
The 9/11 "Truthers" movement is no more reasonable than the Obama "Birthers" are. These are opposite manifestations of the same type of ignorance.

The Bush Admin clearly went out of their way to accommodate the attacks, but the notion that these people planned and carried it out is laughable. I've seen Loose Change. It was made by well intentioned kids who really have no concept of construction. I could tear apart virtually all their arguments, but for space sake here are two:
They point out that a steel-framed building in Spain burned for two days and did not fall down. Well, the Towers were also steel framed, but the columns were encased in metal stud and sheetrock. The building in Spain was a concrete superstructure, meaning steel columns were encased in concrete. That building could burn for weeks and not fall down......but also note that there was a portion of the building that was not concrete superstructure.....and it collapsed. The Twin Towers were fire traps. They were 1 hour rated buildings (anyone remember how long they took to fall??...). They were made to withstand enormous impact, but couldn't withstand a sustained campfire. When they started shaking the police helicopters were radioing telling their bosses to evacuate, but of course Rudy Radios prevented that from happening.
The reason the second tower hit fell first was because there were 30 floors above the impact point. Once the steel weakened (no, it did not even need to come close to melting) everything collapsed. And trust me, when that kind of weight starts collapsing, steel columns are in no way "resistance" and it will fall at free fall speed. Plus demo'd buildings collapse from the bottom. And windows popped out due to substantial pressure in an air tight building.
Bldg 7 had a lot of fuel tanks in the basement that burned continuously. That could have easily brought the buildings down after substantial burn....though I am also well aware that Silverstein knew the attacks were coming and may have demo'd that building for insurance purposes....I will concede to that possibility.
Yes, the Bush Admin was WELL aware the attacks were coming and allowed them to happen. But the Bush Admin could not plan a lunch without screwing it up. And if you want an event you need to happen for political gain, and then find out someone else is planning it, why would you then need to do it yourself. Why not just let it happen. Also, if Rummy launched a missile at the Pentagon, why would he make sure he was there that day. Even HE is not THAT stupid.

How can an average reader know whose evidence is valid and whose is cooked up? Realistically, we can't know.
However, it is certain that the Bush administration was criminally negligent about warnings and signs it received from the FBI and CIA about an impending attack prior to 9/11. It is also well established that members of the previous Bush administration tried to make an oil pipeline deal with the Taliban that fell through and motivated the Taliban to get revenge.
Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld didn't need to draw up plans for Osama bin Laden. All they needed to do was ignore and reject all warnings of an impending attack. Bin Laden was happy to do the rest. The Bushies left the door open to attack America, and al Qaida quite predictably walked through that door.
The result was that Dick Cheney got the "new Pearl Harbor" he needed to push through his PNAC plan to take over mideast oil resources by force. After a quick smackdown of the Taliban in Afghanistan, the Bushies immediately went after their real target: Iraq's oil.
Now we see why their plan was insane, and why insane, corrupt neocons should never again be allowed to have any political power. Because they'd just love to do it again. They can hardly wait.

NIST's report on the Twin Towers admits they came down "essentially in free fall"- NIST did not examine the mechanics of what it termed "global collapse"; it merely claims that this is what happened- 15 and 30 stories of building mass crushed the lower 80-95 stories into dust and small piles of rubble.

The planes and Al Qaeda can be ruled out- and the number of people with access to the buildings and the materials needed to destroy them is certainly small. I doubt the entire "Bush Administration" was involved- Bush himself may only have known we we're going to be attacked and purposefully did nothing to harden security (he got 40 Al Qaeda-related briefings leading up to 9/11, including the Aug 6 PDB, which warned of "preparations consistent with hijacking" and "surveillance of federal buildings in New York", and that there were 70 FBI field investigations.

I'm not sure who said that in politics there is no such thing as a coincidence. The weight of coincidence should at least point to something less than blind chance on 9/11. Why on that day was Cheney in command of some war games in that area going over scenarios just like the what happened at the WTC? Remember Bush later asking who would think terrorits would fly planes into buidings. In the years prior to 9/11 over 60 times fighters were scrambled to intercept jets that had veered off course, why when CHeney was involved were FOUR planes allowed to not only veer off course but hit targets? I have only ever heard one person claim to have investigated 9/11 and not believe it to be an inside job and that was Ron Paul--who has admitted that he said that because he has his hands full battling the Federal Reserve.

Incidentally, questioning the government's account is not conspiracy theory, it is being skeptical of a conspiracy theory.

If you want to talk crazy and completely unsupported conspiracy theory I've got one for you, it's called the "19 Arabs with boxcutters" -- it's pure bullshit and everyone knows it.
For those interested in knowing what actually happened on 9/11, see Dr Judy Wood's forensic examination of the evidence. Dr Wood is a former professor of mechanical engineering from Clemson University who received her PhD in materials engineering science from Virginia Tech.
Dr Wood's examination was submitted to NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) in the form of a Request For Correction and was already successful in getting NIST to confirm that they did not analyze the "collapses", even though they were mandated to do so by Congress.
Dr Wood's analysis shows, very clearly, that directed energy weapons (DEW) were a causal factor in the destruction of the World Trade Center. In Dr Wood's legal documents, she also notes that some of the sub-contractors hired by NIST, such as Applied Research Associates (ARA) and Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), are founding sponsors of the Directed Energy Professional Society.
Dr Wood has been in contact with the US military's Directed Energy Directorate, located at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico, and they do not deny that DEWs destroyed the WTC. Instead they claim "phenomena that we cannot explain here". Their representative also finds “Dr Wood's investigation interesting and worthy of further consideration”.

I agree with you all, and here's something to think about. Larry Silverstein said that they where going to "Pull It" in regard to the building. Later on his spokesperson said he meant the firefighters put the context of the interview was about his buildings. And you are correct about the flight that the passengers took over and made "crash" into that field. The funny thing that isn't in the media anymore and you literally have to find it is that they said that wreckage was strewn over a few miles. And also if that plane took a header into the field, it had the same problem as with the plane that "flew" into the Pentagon. Where was the wings, the tail section, the engines and the whole wreck. It's not their because the one plane was shot out of the sky and the other one wasn't a plane but a missile. They won't even show any coverage of the jet approaching the pentagon on an attack run (which was weird because the type of pilot that had to fly a 737 at less than tree top level to do a suicide crash without crashing into the ground before the target had to be a seasoned pilot). They where showing the towers planes all the time, but they won't show the pentagon.
Something that day wasn't right, and it may be as simple as somebody allowed this attack to happen and coattailed on this attack to make it more damaging.

Rawstory look at the facts. Building 7 fell without being hit by a plane, and the most videotaped airspace in the world (D.C.) failed to present one video that showed definitive proof the the pentagon was hit by a plane.

Hmmmm. Which University gave him his physics doctorate, so that he feels qualified to peer review the paper that describes Thermate residue in the rubble of the twin towers? As a civil engineer with 20-years professional experience, I can state, emphatically, that the odds of a 110-story steel structure imploding upon itself would be astronomical; the odds of it happening three successive times is beyond the scope of natural physics and reason. It would require catastrophic, and simultaneous, failure across all of the columns. Even the smallest delay of failure in a few columns would result in a toppling affect.
"Who" brought down the buildings is still in question. "How" they were brought down is not - by a highly sophisticated system of demolition charges.
If Larry Silverstein says "pull it" and building 7 collapses, then it is obvious
that this is no 'theory".
